Statement- NJN Mourns the Death of President Jimmy Carter (Z”l) (12-30-2024)
December 30, 2024- New Jewish Narrative (NJN) mourns the passing of former US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter.
In a career and life marked with accomplishments and honors– building homes for those in need, funding research to eradicate diseases, standing firmly against racial segregation– President Carter set an example of tikkun olam, or repairing the world, that few can rival.
In 1978, President Carter negotiated the Camp David Accords. It was in support of this process that 348 Israeli senior reserve army officers and combat soldiers came together to urge the Israeli government to sign a peace deal with Egypt, forming Peace Now. The resulting agreement, signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, remains a bedrock of Middle East politics and security– a rare and important guidestone on the long road to peace in the Middle East.
NJN President and CEO Hadar Susskind said: “President Carter knew, forty-six years ago, what remains true today– that real stability and security in the Middle East can only be achieved through peace. We will remember and carry forward his legacy of decency and democracy. May his memory be a blessing.”
