NJN Opposes Huckabee Confirmation

March 25, 2025- Today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing to consider former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s nomination to serve as America’s next ambassador to Israel.

Governor Huckabee has an extensive record of alarming statements and views related to Israel and Palestine, including his staunch criticism of ceasefire talks, saying that “there’s no valid reason to have a cease-fire with Hamas” and that a ceasefire should not even be entertained until after the hostages are released. He has repeatedly denied national Palestinian identity –  claiming that there “isn’t such a thing” as Palestinians, and arguing that Israel’s rule over the West Bank and Gaza is not an “occupation.” Governor Huckabee has also actively participated in actions that undermine US diplomatic credibility, including laying bricks to build settlements.

“While Huckabee’s record speaks for itself, this hearing would have been a great opportunity to walk back some of these radical views and to demonstrate the diplomatic leadership requisite for the position of ambassador,” said New Jewish Narrative President & CEO Hadar Susskind.

“We need a clear-eyed leader committed to building a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live side-by-side, not an ideologue whose words and actions will push us further from peace. Unfortunately, Huckabee instead reinforced all of the reasons why he is a dangerous pick for this role.”

The US ambassador to Israel must engage with complex geopolitical realities, facilitate negotiations in good faith, and advance US strategic interests through responsible statecraft. Huckabee’s record demonstrates an inability to fulfill these duties. The Senate should refuse to confirm his nomination.
