New Jewish Narrative Supports Senator Sanders’ Joint Resolutions of Disapproval

April 2, 2025- Following the resumption of widespread Israeli military activity in Gaza, the Senate is preparing to vote on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block the Trump Administration’s proposed $8.8 billion sale of certain bombs and other munitions to Israel. New Jewish Narrative (NJN) calls on senators to vote for the resolutions.

Among the weapons included in this sale are more than 35,000 2,000-pound bombs – the same munitions the Biden Administration chose to withhold from Israel due to their devastating impact in densely populated areas. The Palestinian death toll in this war is astronomically high, and 59 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza. Their lives too are endangered by the escalating fighting.

Selling these arms to Israel now would violate existing US law, including the Foreign Assistance Act and the Arms Export Control Act. Israel’s decision to impose a total blockade of the Gaza Strip after the ceasefire collapsed last month puts these sales in direct violation of the US Foreign Assistance Act, which forbids the transfer of arms to states who prevent the entry of humanitarian aid. As a result of the blockade, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is desperate. The United Nations World Food Programme announced this week that the last of the 25 bakeries it had been supporting in the Gaza Strip had ceased operations.

NJN is committed to Israel’s security. Passage of these resolutions would not impact US support for crucial defensive weapons systems like Iron Dome and David’s Sling, or for aid to Israel overall. It would temporarily halt the transfer of limited and specific weapons. At a time when record numbers of Israelis are in the streets – led by the families of hostages – pressing the Israeli government to prioritize the wellbeing of the remaining hostages over continued fighting, a vote for the resolutions would send the signal that America stands with the Israeli peace camp.

“The urgency of this vote cannot be overstated,” said Hadar Susskind, President and CEO of NJN. “This war needs to come to an end. The US government shouldn’t violate American laws. Sending more 2,000-pound bombs at this moment is illegal and we shouldn’t do it.”
